How do I open the gas tank on a 2018 Nissan Armada?
I teach creative writing at a liberal arts college in the Northeast. My Subaru is in the shop, so I’m borrowing my daughter’s Nissan Armada for the week. I went to fill it up but I realized—to my horror—that I had not the faintest idea of how to open the gas tank panel. I stood there for nearly half an hour, trying to get enough of a grip on the edge of the panel door to open it, but to no avail—it was like trying to pry open the doors to Camelot. Dejected, I got back into the SUV and drove back to the college, on fumes and feeling defeated. I felt like a shell of a man. How do I open the gas tank on a 2018 Nissan Armada?

To open the gas tank panel door on a 2018

, just press on the right side of the panel and the door will pop open, revealing the gas tank inside. To combat fuel theft, automakers have developed safeguards so that fuel tank doors will only open under certain circumstances. While it’s an important protection, it can be a little confusing when you first start driving a new vehicle. Luckily, it’s easy once you get the hang of it. So when you head back to the gas station tomorrow, follow these steps:
- Park the SUV by the gas pump, and turn the engine off (there should be an arrow next to the gas icon on the cluster gauge pointing to the side the gas tank is on)
- Exit the SUV and make sure the doors are unlocked
- Press on the right side of the fuel filler panel
- The fuel filler panel will pop open, and you can fill up
Once you do this and fill your daughter’s SUV up, you’ll be able to return it to her with a full tank—and your dignity intact.
