How do I obtain a used car dealer license in California?
I’ve owned an empty lot for a while and saved money to open a used car dealership. Now that I have the money, I am ready for the next step of getting my license. How do I obtain my used car dealer license in California?

Starting your own business is no easy feat, congratulations! To obtain a used car dealer license in California, you must do the following:
- Complete a Dealer Education Program
- Pass the used dealer test administered by the DMV
- Complete all the forms in the Used Dealer Applications Forms Packet (OL 248U)
- File a Statement of Information (SI 550) or Statement of Information LLC (LLC 12) with the Secretary of State
- Have a copy of your California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) Resale Permit
- Send photographs of your business location to the OL Inspector and make an appointment for them to inspect the location
- Submit your application and pay the associated fees
