How do I insure an imported car?

I'm importing an Aston Martin from England—it's totally a dream car, and I'm still over the moon that I can even afford it. I want to make sure it has the best possible coverage, so how do I insure an imported car an Aston Martin? What type of coverage do I need?

I’m happy to say that indulging your inner James Bond is far easier than you might think! Getting
car insurance
on an imported car is almost identical to insuring a domestic vehicle. You will simply have to get an agreed value policy, which specifies an amount that the insurance company has agreed to cover the vehicle for.
Most providers offer imported car insurance through subsidiaries or partnerships with companies that specialize in imports and classic cars. For example:
  • GEICO uses American Modern Insurance
  • Progressive
    uses Hagerty Auto Insurance
  • USAA uses American Collectors Insurance
Depending on the age of your Aston Martin, you may also qualify for
classic car coverage
, which might be a better option depending on your budget and needs. Whether or not you qualify will depend on your provider, but generally speaking, a car like an Aston Martin will likely be covered if it’s more than 25 years old and if you have an alternative vehicle to use.
Enjoy your dream car!
