How do I get liability insurance for a rental car?

I want to get liability insurance for my rental car—I'm a careful driver, but I want to make sure I'm covered for any eventuality. I currently don't have any car insurance of my own, though, and I don't own a car. So how can I get liability insurance for a rental?

“Kudos to you for being so safety-conscious! I’m happy to say that if you don’t have
car insurance
of your own, you have a couple options to get liability insurance on a rental car:
  • Purchase a non-owner car insurance policy. A

policy is the cheaper option if you rent cars frequently, as the policy is about $200 to $500 per year. However, if you’re only renting briefly, there is another option!
  • Buy car insurance from the rental car company. Rental companies are a great option for insurance if you’re only renting a car for a brief period of time. They might not be the best choice for renting cars frequently or at length, though, since rental companies charge an average of $10 a day.
