A trip to Europe with your girlfriends sounds like a blast! And it’s a good idea to know the driving requirements before you go to save you trouble once you get there.
International travelers are required to have an international driving permit for Europe. To get one, visit the American Automobile Association (AAA) website at aaa.com. Download and complete the international driving permit (IDP) application.
Once you’ve filled out the application, you’ll need:
Two original passport photos
A valid U.S. driver’s license
Payment to cover a $20 fee
Take the application, documents, and payment to your local AAA branch. Alternatively, you may mail all these items to AAA per the instructions online.
Remember that an IDP is valid for one year and can be issued no more than six months before your travel date, so make sure you plan accordingly.
On top of having an IDP, you’ll also want to make sure you have valid international car insurance if you’re planning to rent a car. Although your current insurance policy probably doesn’t cover international travel, Jerry
can help you find a policy that does. Just text one of Jerry’s friendly agents—they’ll steer you in the right direction! That way, you and your girlfriends can enjoy the open road worry-free.
