How do I get a name off a car title?

My parents told me I could have our old family car when I go to college. I'm set to leave next month and I have to look for insurance. However, my mom's name is still on the title. How do I get her name off it?

How exciting! Going to college and getting your first car are huge milestones, so congratulations!
Since you want to purchase
car insurance
, you need to become the vehicle’s registered owner as listed on the title.
To get your mom’s name off the title, she has to transfer the title to you. While transferring ownership varies from state to state, in most cases, your mom will need to sign over the title to you. However, the transfer process is surprisingly simple and just requires a both your signatures and a bit of paperwork.
Almost every state has a
minimum car insurance requirement
, so you may need to purchase insurance before registering the vehicle in your name.
Once your mom signs the title over to you, start shopping for insurance using an app like
