“If you’re canceling your policy, you can find out if you’re eligible to get a car insurance refund by calling your insurer. But remember, most providers will only refund your policy if you paid up front.
Be sure to speak with your provider before canceling your policy and ask them how the refund will be issued as part of the cancellation process. Typically, insurers send your refund via:
  • check,
  • direct deposit, or
  • the original payment method.
As a reminder, to [properly cancel your policy] you’ll want to:
  • Buy a new policy
  • Ask your provider about the cancellation process
  • Sign and send your cancellation letter (this will likely be electronic)
  • Wait for confirmation
You should never cancel your policy before starting a new one because
lapses in coverage
can increase your future insurance rates.
