How do I fix squeaky car door hinges?
Help! Every time I open or close my car door, it squeaks. It’s been going on for weeks and it’s driving me nuts. How do I fix the squeaky hinges?

Sheesh, it certainly sounds like a nuisance (pun intended). But luckily, fixing squeaky car hinges is an easy DIY part of your car’s routine
maintenance
. Applying grease to the door hinges will stop them from squeaking. The squeaking noise is caused by dry metal rubbing up against dry metal. When you add grease, it lubricates the area and allows the metal part to glide, not grate, over one another.
To fix, you’ll need grease like WD-40 or another lubricant spray. Simply:
- Open your car door
- Squirt the hinges with WD-40
- Open and close the door a couple of times
- Wipe away any excess with a rag
Grease will wear off with time. So, when your door hinges are squeaking, that means it’s time to re-up the grease again. To help make the grease longer, keep your door hinges away from moisture. We wouldn’t advise you to leave your car door open during a rain or snowstorm, for example.
