How do I fix corroded brake pipes?

My brake pedal was sinking, so I checked out my brake system and everything looked fine. But the little brake pipes in the brake line look rusted and corroded. How do I fix corroded brake pipes? Or should just let an expert do it?

Having your
brakes
fail while driving is one of the scariest things that can happen while behind the wheel.
Whether or not you can fix this yourself depends on your skill level with DIY projects related to your car. This is not a project for beginners. If you haven’t done much work on the car before, leave this project to the professionals. You’ll also need a lot of special tools most people don’t have, including cutting, bending, and flaring tools.
Here are the basic steps involved in fixing corroded brake pipes:
  • Confirm you do need to replace the brake pipes. Dirty pipes and pipes with a hint of surface rust can simply be cleaned.
  • Empty the brake master cylinder and brake fluid reservoir.
  • Precisely measure what needs replacing. You’ll have to shape the new brake pipe to suit your specific brake system.
  • Prepare your new brake pipe, which includes cutting, bending, and flaring the metal to suit your purposes. This is arguably the most difficult part of the process due to the accuracy you need.
  • Remove the old brake pipe. This will usually involve a wrench, a screwdriver, pulling out some pins, or some combination thereof.
  • Install your new brake pipes. Do this carefully and take your time!
  • Refill the brake fluid reservoir and bleed the brake lines. If you don’t know how to bleed brake lines properly, this fix might be a little too difficult.
  • Test everything out! Test the brakes safely in your driveway or a parking lot first, then road test the car to make sure everything is working correctly.
