What a bother! We’ll get you into your car’s hood in no time. Here’s how you fix a broken hood latch.
First, make sure the car hasn’t run in the last thirty minutes (which won’t be a problem for this). Things can get hot under the hood, and we don’t want you burning yourself while trying to fix your latch. Then, engage the hood release inside the car.
To get to the latch, you have three options, depending on the type of car you have:
Find the latch from under the vehicle if your car has no grille.
Find the latch through the grille if the grille is large enough.
Remove the grille to access the latch if the grille is too small.
Now that you’ve found the latch, use a screwdriver or a metal pole to trip the latch and get under the hood. You should be able to pop it. If it remains jam, spray some lubricant on it. Or, check to make sure the latch is aligned with the latch mechanism. You may need to pop it back into place.
Using these tricks, you should be back under the hood. But if this didn’t work, then your best bet is to head to the mechanic.
While insurance won’t cover basic maintenance
, if the latch or hood is damaged due to a collision or covered accident, you could get the repairs covered. Make sure you’re making the most of your insurance policy
