How do I find out if my car has a recall?

I heard from my dad that my car might have a recall. He didn’t know a lot of details about it, though. Where do you look up car recalls?

“Safety is very important!
To find out if your vehicle has a recall, run your VIN through the database at NHTSA.gov.
U.S. automakers have to report recalls to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). By using your car’s unique vehicle identification number (VIN), you can check for recalls on the NHTSA website.
Your VIN is usually located on your car in one of two places:
  • The base of your windshield
  • The driver-side doorjamb
If a recall does pop up, the NHTSA will provide details. Fortunately, recalls are always repaired free of charge at your dealer’s service center. While some are more urgent than others, you probably shouldn’t wait on a repair.
