How do I end my renters insurance?
After more than a year of searching, I found a great house. I’ll be closing next month and moving out of my apartment. How do I go about ending my renters insurance?

Congratulations! In terms of canceling your renters insurance, the process should be straightforward. First, look on your insurance company’s website to find their cancellation directions, including any forms that you may need to fill out. If you’d rather speak directly to someone, most companies provide not only dedicated phone lines but also the ability to chat with an agent.
Here are some other points to keep in mind:
- You may be entitled to a refund, but there may also be a cancellation fee. If you paid for the year and will cancel before the policy is up, you’re entitled to a prorated refund. Don’t be surprised, however, if the company deducts a small fee for canceling early.
- Don’t cancel before your homeowners policy is in place and full effect. You may be tempted to cancel your renters insurance early to save a few dollars, but that approach would leave your personal property unprotected. When you select a cancelation date, be sure that your homeowners policy will be in effect.
