Doing anything backward isn’t easy, whether it’s reciting the alphabet, walking, or driving. But don’t worry, you can do it!
First, look around. You want to make sure there isn’t anything behind you. You’ll want to go slow through this process and be constantly aware of your surroundings to keep everyone and yourself safe.
Next, make sure your car is in reverse. While it may seem silly, there are plenty of times someone has thought they were in reverse but were actually in drive.
Once you’re sure you’re in reverse, turn your head to your right and look through your back window. You might want to turn your whole body with your head to see clearly. Balance tip: Many drivers will rest their right arm over the back of the passenger seat during this process.
Keep your left hand near the top of the steering wheel as you turn it in the direction you want the vehicle to go.
Turning the steering wheel to the right moves the back of the car to the right.
Turning the steering wheel to the left moves the back of the car to the left.
Remember: Stay calm and breathe. You can do this. Practice will help you get used to doing it.
