How do I clean a car radiator?
I drive through rural areas frequently, and I’ve noticed a buildup of bug guts on the grille of my vehicle. When I shine a light inside, the radiator is covered with bugs and grime, as are the radiator fans. How can I fully clean my radiator?

Bug guts can get everywhere when you drive in rural areas! Fortunately, you can clean the exterior of your radiator with a heavy-duty cleaner, a hose, and a brush.
To clean the exterior of the radiator, follow these steps:
- Use a non-corrosive, heavy-duty cleaner.
- Spray the fins and the exterior of the radiator with the cleaner.
- Use a soft-bristled brush to remove any excess grime.
- Use a low-pressure setting on a hose to rinse off the cleaner and debris/grime/dirt.
To clean the interior of your radiator, follow these steps:
- Drain the radiator, making sure to put a pan underneath to catch the radiator fluid.
- Add cleaner to the radiator and replace the cap.
- Turn on the engine and let it run for about 15 minutes.
- Turn off the engine and allow the radiator to cool.
- Drain the cleaner.
- Fill the radiator with water and let the engine run for five minutes to rinse the interior.
- Top off the radiator with coolant or antifreeze.
