How do I check the transmission fluid on a 2004 Ford Explorer?
My Explorer is getting pretty old, so I want to be sure I keep up with maintenance so it lasts as long as possible. It’s been a while since I checked on my transmission. How can you tell if your transmission fluid needs to be filled?

! That’s definitely the best way to extend the life of your vehicle.Follow these basic steps to check the transmission fluid on a 2004 Ford Explorer:
- Park your vehicle on a flat surface and give the engine time to cool down. The engine should remain off as you check the transmission fluid.
- Open the hood by pulling the release lever under the dashboard panel to the left of the steering wheel.
- Locate the transmission dipstick and pull it out.
- Use a rag to wipe the fluid from the dipstick, and stick it back in its slot to collect fresh fluid from the reservoir.
- Confirm that the fluid level is between the minimum and maximum notches on the dipstick. If it falls below the minimum line, add up to a half-quart of fluid until it reaches the required fluid level.
