How do I change the power steering hose on a Ford F-150?

The power steering on my Ford F-150 has been a bit dodgy as of late. I read that the cause could be a problem with the power steering hose. How can I replace the hose in my Ford F-150 on my own?

Power steering hoses carry the power steering fluid from the pump to the steering rack. So if you’ve noticed some rough steering and the reservoir is full, you may need to replace the hose. Unfortunately, the process is a bit complex. You’ll need the following tools to change the power steering hose in your Ford F-150:
  • New hose
  • Pliers
  • Breaker bar
  • Gloves and rags
  • Rust penetrant
  • Jack/jack stands
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Wrenches, sockets, and ratchets
  • Funnel and power steering fluid
  • Drain pan
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Zip ties
After assembling these items, you can follow these steps to replace your power steering hose:
  • Remove the plastic housing cover assembly.
  • Remove the air intake system.
  • Remove the power steering belt.
  • Drain the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the high-pressure fluid found behind the wheel.
  • Remove the power steering hose from the power steering pump.
  • Remove the power steering pump.
  • Put the pump in a vice for stability when removing the power steering hose.
  • Install your new hose.
  • Reassemble everything in the reverse order—starting with the steering pump and ending with the plastic housing assembly.
Depending on your car, a professional power steering hose replacement could cost up to $460. While that might seem high, it may be worthwhile if you aren’t comfortable replacing it yourself.
