Thankfully, the road to becoming a driving instructor (pun intended) is simple and fairly straightforward.
To become a certified driving instructor in New Jersey, you’ll need to prove you meet the following criteria:
You are at least 21 years old
You possess a valid driver’s license
You have at minimum 4 years’ driving experience
If you tick all the above boxes, your next step is to get a driving instructor’s license through the Motor Vehicle Commission. Download and complete the application for an Initial Driving School Instructors License at www.state.nj.us/mvc
. Then, mail it to New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, Business Licensing Services Bureau, Driving School Unit, P.O. Box 170, 225 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08666-0170. Once your application is processed, you’ll undergo a written test, a driving test, and a visual acuity screening. You’ll be granted a license when you successfully complete all three.
Then, you can apply to work at a driving school, or you could even open your own!
