How do I become a certified driving instructor in NJ?
I live in New Jersey, and I’m thinking about becoming a driving instructor. I’m not sure where to start or what I need to do. How do I become a certified driving instructor?

Thankfully, the road to becoming a driving instructor (pun intended) is simple and fairly straightforward.
To become a certified driving instructor in New Jersey, you’ll need to prove you meet the following criteria:
- You are at least 21 years old
- You possess a valid driver’s license
- You have at minimum 4 years’ driving experience
If you tick all the above boxes, your next step is to get a driving instructor’s license through the Motor Vehicle Commission. Download and complete the application for an Initial Driving School Instructors License at
www.state.nj.us/mvc
. Then, mail it to New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, Business Licensing Services Bureau, Driving School Unit, P.O. Box 170, 225 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08666-0170.Once your application is processed, you’ll undergo a written test, a driving test, and a visual acuity screening. You’ll be granted a license when you successfully complete all three.
