I live in New Jersey and I've heard of dollar a day insurance. I'm having trouble affording my insurance, so this seems like a good option. How can I get it?

New Jersey’s
dollar-a-day insurance
—or Special Automobile Insurance Policy (SAIP)—is a program designed to cover medical costs for low-income drivers following an accident.
To qualify for SAIP, you need to be on federal Medicaid with hospitalization—note that not every Medicaid program qualifies for the program. You also need a valid and active license.
While the cost is low at $365 a year, there are limitations to coverage. SAIP only covers: Emergency treatment after an accident Treatment of serious brain and spinal cord injuries up to $250,000 A $10,000 death benefit is also in the policy. SAIP does not include:
Liability coverage
Collision coverage
Comprehensive coverage
Outpatient treatment covered by Medicaid If you cause an accident and you only have SAIP, you will be solely responsible for the other driver’s medical bills and vehicle repairs, as well as your own repairs and any medical bills not covered under your SAIP policy. Most insurers in New Jersey offer SAIP. If you’re eligible, reach out to your insurance company. You can also call 1-800-652-2471 for help finding a provider that offers the policy.
