How do I add a renters insurance requirement to a lease?

“As a property owner, it is your right to require that any tenants have renters insurance (and it’s a good idea to do so as well!). Because the lease is a legally binding contract, and because landlord/tenant laws vary from state to state, it is appropriate to consult a real estate attorney or contract law professional.
It is also very helpful to consult with other property owners and landlords in your neighborhood. You can usually find income-property owners groups or clubs near you on social media platforms. These groups generally present an open forum for members to ask questions, give and receive advice, and network with each other.
The most important thing to remember is to ask for proof of the renters insurance policy. You can require the tenant to provide a copy of the declarations page at each renewal so you can be assured that they are keeping continuous coverage.
You can also ask to be made an interested party on the policy. This way, you will be automatically notified if your tenant’s insurance coverage is changed or canceled.
