How do centipedes get into the house?
I’m living in a newly constructed home so I’m really confused how centipedes got into my house—everything is sealed! How do centipedes get into the house?

Yuck! I’m sorry you’re dealing with centipedes! Centipedes can get into your home through holes, cracks, gaps in the foundation, or even the smallest openings between doorframes and doors.
Centipedes can also enter your home through drains and sump pumps. Although this is uncommon, it’s possible that they attached themselves to articles of your clothing or other items brought inside.
I can’t guarantee that you’ll never have centipedes again, but here are some tips to prevent them:
- House centipedes are omnivorous, meaning they can eat your crumbs or other bugs. Triple check for cracks in moist, dark locations and seal them to limit their food source.
- Centipedes are nocturnal. They want dark, damp, and confined spaces. Eliminate clutter so they find somewhere else to go!
- House centipedes love humidity. Make sure you don’t have any plumbing leaks or get a dehumidifier to keep them out.
If you’re seeing centipedes frequently, you might have a bigger pest problem. Centipedes are known for killing roaches, moths, flies, silverfish, and termites. If you’re unsure how to proceed, call an exterminator to evaluate for signs of other pests.
