How do bailiffs find your car?

I was watching a British TV show the other night, and one of the main characters had a bailiff out looking for his car because of debts he owed. Can this happen in the US, and even if it can’t, how do these guys find the cars they’re looking for?

We don’t have bailiffs in the US, but we do have collections agencies. Luckily, they can’t just take your car without a judgment being awarded against you first, but that’s not necessarily the case in the UK and Wales. There, bailiffs use different methods to find your car, and they can even impound it in some instances due to old debt.
Here is the order of places a bailiff will typically look for a car that’s been flagged:
  • Your home
  • Your place of work
  • Streets in neighboring areas
Some will even use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras that can scan for the right plates as they drive around town.
Even with high-tech help, it can be difficult for bailiffs to find the car they’re after, but finding the
