This morning, it began to snow. When I turned on my wipers, they started skipping across the windshield and making an awful racket. I know I need to fix the problem before another storm comes along. How can you stop windshield wipers from skipping?

Skipping wipers are more than just a noisy nuisance—they can make it hard to drive. Although it may take a bit of time to figure out what’s causing your wipers to skip, you can likely diagnose the issue yourself.
Begin by investigating the answers to these questions:
- Are your wiper blades dirty? Clean them off. Dirty wipers cause friction when they pass over the glass of the windshield.
- Is your windshield dirty? Like dirty wiper blades, a dirty windshield can create friction. Try cleaning off your windshield.
- Are your wiper blades worn? Inspect them. If they are noticeably worn with cracks or damaged areas, this may be the issue. Replace them.
- Is your wiper arm torqued or damaged? If your wiper arms are not angling your blades correctly, they will skip. Inspect your wiper arms and the blade angles.
