How can I transfer my car insurance from New York to Pennsylvania?

I’m moving from New York to Pennsylvania. I need to transfer my car insurance and get new license plates. I’d like to do it as soon as possible, so the same day would be best. Where would I get my Pennsylvania license plates?

Congratulations on the move! I’m sure you have a lot to think about already, so thankfully, transferring your
car insurance
from New York to Pennsylvania is fairly easy.
To transfer your car insurance, you’ll need to contact your insurance company first. If you’re with a larger insurance provider, they likely operate in
Pennsylvania
as well. If not, you’ll need to find another company that does operate in Pennsylvania. Keep in mind that coverage requirements vary between New York and Pennsylvania, so you may see a change in the cost of your insurance.
If you’re unhappy with your updated rate or need a new company, consider using the
Jerry
app to make things easier for you. Jerry collects personalized quotes from over 50 top insurance providers, like Nationwide and Travelers, to ensure you’re always getting the best rate for the coverage you need.
Once you’ve got your insurance taken care of, you’ll need to visit the DMV or an authorized agent to get your vehicle titled and registered. You should be able to do this in a day (or at least receive temporary proof until you receive your physical plates) by submitting the following information:
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license or temporary license
  • Proof of car insurance
    in Pennsylvania
  • Title of the vehicle
  • Proof of VIN tracing by an inspection mechanic
  • A completed Form MV-1(also known as an Application for Certificate of Title)
  • Money for any potential registration fees and sales tax
From there, your vehicle should be all set in your new state. Since there are a lot of steps in the process, don’t be afraid to contact the DMV or visit their website to ensure you get your license plates as soon as possible.
I hope all goes well!
