We’re so sorry that you’re dealing with this! Anything that keeps us from driving safely and confidently can cause a lot of stress, but you aren’t alone—many people struggle with a phobia of driving over bridges, overpasses, or mountains. Here are some suggestions to overcome your fear of heights while driving:
1. Try therapy or hypnosis. The most effective way to deal with a phobia is to seek out treatment like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or hypnotherapy.
2. Practice grounding techniques. Learning to relax at will through practices like grounding and meditation can relieve some of your physical anxiety.
3. Start slow. Ease yourself into driving over bridges or high areas by starting with lower and shorter bridges first. Challenge yourself to level up each time!
4. Reach out for support. It can be helpful to have a trusted person in the car with you as you venture out to conquer your fear.
5. Optimize conditions. Adjust your seat, temperature, and steering wheel to make sure you’re physically comfortable. It may also help to play relaxing music or sounds while you drive.
