How can I keep rabbits out of the garden?
I’ve gotten into gardening the last couple of years, and I planted a massive veggie garden in hopes of growing a bunch of my food! However, every morning I find the lettuce has been nibbled on—it’s incredibly frustrating. How do I keep rabbits out of my garden?

Rabbits in the garden can be frustrating, especially if they’re eating your plants! The best way to keep rabbits out of the garden is to fence it off, preventing them from accessing the plants.
Try these if you’re looking for other ideas to keep rabbits out of the garden!
- Add physical barriers: Rabbits can hop, so a picket fence isn’t going to do the trick. Use chicken wire with 1” or smaller mesh to create a fence around the garden. Keep in mind that rabbits dig, so bury the fence in the ground. Motion-activated sprinklers are also an excellent option to send them running.
- Protect individual plants: If you have certain plants that are a rabbit target, protect them with wire or mesh or plant cages.
- Plant rabbit-proof plants: If you can’t put up a fence, planting rabbit-proof plants is your next best bet. Rabbits don’t like plants with strong scents—basil, garlic, rhubarb, hot peppers, mint, and spicy basil. Sometimes marigolds work, too.
- Make a spray: There are plenty of recipes online, but generally, they include a few ingredients that deter rabbits—cayenne pepper, garlic powder, pure castile soap, and water. Pour it into a spray bottle and spray plants rabbits usually nibble on.
