How can I keep my windshield clear during the winter?
I live in the snowy northeast and drive a lot in the winter. How can I keep a clean windshield when driving in snow?

We know all about the challenges of keeping windshields clear during winter—it can be tricky! Here are some tips that should help:
- Clear snow and ice from your car: Whip out your scraper and clear the snow and ice off your car. Snow and ice from your roof can slide onto your windshield as it melts or fly off as you drive, potentially blinding other drivers or even cracking their windshields.
- Load up on windshield washer fluid: Make sure you regularly top up your washer fluid and keep a spare (or two) in the trunk. Only use washer fluid rated for freezing temperatures, otherwise you risk it freezing.
- Clear windshield fog: Heavy fog on your windshield can make winter driving dangerous. To clear the exterior, turn up your defroster and only drive when it’s clear. Moisture can build up inside the car and fog up the windshield’s interior, so remove any water (from winter mats boots), crank the heat, then slightly crack your window to let any moisture out. You can also put some kitty litter into a sock and place it under a seat—the litter absorbs the moisture and helps keep your windows clear.
- Deal with freezing rain: Snow can quickly change to freezing rain as temperatures change. To keep your windshield clear, crank your heater and turn off all other airflow so your car’s hot air is used exclusively by the defroster. Use sub-zero washer fluid liberally to keep the windshield free of ice. If the ice builds up, pull over to a safe space, put your hazards on, get out…and scrape!
