How can I get Wi-Fi while traveling in a car?

We’re taking a family car trip this summer and want to figure out a way to use Wi-Fi so that our kids can stay plugged into their tablets and other devices. Any tips?

Planning ways to keep children happy on long car trips pays off! Here are some ideas for creating a Wi-Fi hotspot in your car:
  • Have OnStar? Use it as a hotspot. Many vehicles come with OnStar or OnStar-like systems. For a fee, you can use them as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to seven devices.
  • Buy a portable hotspot modem. Your cellphone company probably sells them, and many of them support up to 10 devices. You can purchase one outright (4G ones start around $40) or set up monthly payments for a device.
  • Use your phone as a hotspot. It’s fairly easy to set up the hotspot feature in either an iPhone or Android.
  • Data fees apply. Depending on what approach you decide to take, data rates apply. OnStar charges a fee—as does your cell phone company.
When using your phone (or a portable modem) as a Wi-Fi hotspot, any data that is used counts against your family’s data plan. Unless you are on an unlimited data plan, you may wind up running out of data—and/or paying for more data.
