Here are some of the best tips to drive safely behind a truck:
Stay out of blind spots—The bigger the vehicle, the larger the blind spot. Speed up ahead of the truck or slow down so the truck driver can see you through the side mirrors. A good rule of thumb to remember is that if you can’t see the driver, they probably can’t see you.
Pass safely—It’s best to pass trucks on the left so the driver can see you passing. Be sure to maintain your speed and give the proper signals well in advance.
Give you and the truck some space—Aim to keep a four-second window of distance between you and the truck. This will help if you need to dramatically reduce your speed or stop your vehicle.
Stay focused—When driving behind a large truck, be sure to reduce all possible distractions. Lower your car’s stereo and refrain from looking at your phone while driving. The more focused you are, the more in control and safer you’ll be.
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs—This is a serious no-no whether you’re behind a large truck or not. Never get behind the wheel of any vehicle while under the influence. You could end up in an accident or be faced with a DWI, which could lead to your license being suspended.
