How can I avoid rental car insurance?

I'm renting a car next week. I heard that rental car insurance from a rental car company is a scam. I want to be protected, but how do I avoid rental car insurance with the rental company?

If you don’t want to purchase
rental car insurance
from the rental car company, you have a few options.
The most common way to avoid rental car insurance is having your own
car insurance
. Most car insurance policies extend to rental cars. Call your insurer to see what their rental car coverage is.
If you don’t have your own insurance policy, look into your credit card benefits. If you’re planning on paying for your rental with a credit card, most credit cards offer some form of rental car insurance that can save you some cash.
Credit cards typically require you to reject the rental car company’s collision damage waiver and pay for the full rental with your card. By doing so, your credit card will cover damage and theft to the rental vehicle.
If you don’t have a car and aren’t paying with a credit card, you could opt for a
non-owner policy
. Non-owner policies offer coverage to those who don’t own a car but frequently rent or borrow one.
If you’re interested in a non-owner policy, make sure to shop around for rates with
