How are public electric vehicle charging stations powered?

I’ve been noticing more and more electric vehicle charging stations around my city. I know that electric vehicles are purported as being cleaner, more renewable energy, but where does the power that charges them come from?

Much like the electricity at your home, office, or any of the businesses you patronize, the electricity at
electric vehicle
charging stations comes from being connected to the grid. Where exactly that energy is coming from depends on
where you’re located
.
Perhaps contrary to what its name implies,
the grid
is actually a broad, disconnected series of power sources that provide energy via various methods. Electricity on the grid is produced by one of the following methods:
  • Water: hydroelectric dams send water through a turbine, spinning it, which activates a generator that produces electricity.
  • Fossils fuels: Fossil fuel electricity relies on the burning of coal, natural gas, or oil to generate steam turbines.
  • Nuclear power: Atoms split in a nuclear reactor generate heat, which creates steam to power a turbine.
  • Wind and solar: These sustainable methods produce electricity with very low carbon emissions compared to other methods, but unfortunately are less reliable due to their dependence on certain weather conditions.
