Does USAA renters insurance cover bed bugs?
My roommate just returned from a long vacation. And in addition to some cute souvenirs, she brought back bed bugs! Will my USAA renters insurance policy pay the cost of hiring an exterminator to get rid of the bed bugs?

Ugh—pest infestations are always disturbing, but bed bugs can (literally) make your skin crawl! You won’t be happy to learn that no, USAA renters insurance doesn’t cover the cost of an exterminator. Most renters and home insurance policies won’t. Why? Because insurers say that bed bugs are the result of negligence on your part. Of course, it’s easy enough for bed bugs to hitch a ride in a person’s backpack, so don’t be too ready to accuse your friend of being careless.
You may want to review these tips for keeping bed bugs out of your apartment in the future with your roommate:
- Whenever you stay at a B&B or hotel, inspect the room for tell-tale signs like dark spots on sheets or walls. Other clues are small insect shells and musty smells. If you see signs of bed bugs, ask to be moved to another room—on another side of the motel.
- Don’t unpack your clothes and put them in motel dressers. Instead, leave them in your suitcase and place the suitcase on a flat surface, up high and away from the bed, curtains, and other furniture with fabric, like sofas.
- When you return home, inspect your luggage and/or bags carefully before you bring them inside the house. Obviously, this can be tricky. If you don’t want to stand out in your apartment complex’s parking lot, find a picnic bench or sort them on your patio or deck if you have one.
