I am going to be driving in Mexico. Will my U.S.-based insurance cover me?

“The Mexican government requires that tourists get auto liability insurance from a Mexico-based insurance company. However, many U.S.-based companies work with Mexican insurance affiliates to provide you with an easy way to get car insurance.
Depending on your carrier, you may be able to get a policy directly through them. Many carriers partner with Mexican insurance companies to offer car insurance coverage in Mexico.
Keep in mind that Mexico does not recognize American car insurance policies. If you’re uninsured and get into an accident in Mexico, you could be paying out of pocket for all damages. Conversely, some U.S.-based insurers may offer coverage if you’re within a certain distance of the U.S.-Mexico border. Check with your current provider to see if this applies to you.
If your current company does not provide any options for travel in Mexico, you’ll have to shop around. Do some research on what U.S.-based insurance companies partner with Mexican insurance companies and download the

app to compare prices.”
