renters insurance
. Lightning strikes can damage property, start fires, and trigger electrical surges. It sounds like perhaps lightning struck a nearby power line and the resulting power surge damaged your television. Lightning is one of the most common
named perils
in a renters insurance policy, alongside storms, fires, and theft. That means you can file a claim and request coverage (minus your deductible) to replace your damaged TV.It’s rare but sometimes lightning is excluded from an insurance policy. This usually happens in areas where lightning strikes happen frequently. It may also be excluded from very cheap policies.
One more thing to keep in mind: You may not receive reimbursement for the entire original price of the TV, depending on which type of renters insurance policy you have.
- ACV (actual cash value) policy: Takes into account depreciation. In other words, if you bought the TV for $1,000 three years ago, it may only be worth $500 now.
- Replacement cost policy: Offers better coverage but the premium is more expensive.
