Does renters insurance cover accidental damage to a TV?

I was watching a nature show and my cat went crazy! It was super funny until she knocked my TV over and broke it. Will my renters insurance cover the accidental damage to my TV?

Oh no! While I’m sure it was entertaining, it’s unfortunate that your TV broke. Renters insurance covers accidental damage to a TV, but it needs to be from a
covered peril
.
Although the purpose of renters insurance is to protect your personal property from accidental damage, in this instance, you wouldn’t have coverage. Common covered perils in a renters policy include:
  • Fire
  • Wind
  • Freezing
  • Lightning
  • Smoke
  • Theft
  • Vandalism and malicious mischief
Since your cat knocked over your TV, you wouldn’t be able to submit a claim for the damage. While I’m sure you’re disappointed, I hope you can get your TV fixed!
If you’re ever interested in exploring your options for renters insurance, consider using
