Does renters insurance cover a broken window?
I was at my friend’s apartment and I accidentally broke her window. We both have renters insurance. I’m not sure if I should pay for repairs out of pocket or file a claim. Does renters insurance cover a broken window?

I’m sorry to hear you broke your friend’s window! Accidents happen, so don’t feel too guilty. Don’t pay for repairs out of pocket without filing a claim first. Your personal liability coverage will pay for window repairs in someone else’s home, but not your own.
If you are found liable for damaging someone else’s property, your personal liability will cover the cost of repairs and legal expenses. Personal liability will cover the following claims:
- Dog bites. If your dog bites someone, your personal liability insurance will cover and legal expenses associated with the claim.
- Falling trees. Your personal liability insurance would cover the legal fees if a tree on your single-family home rental property falls and damages your neighbor’s home.
- Injury. If you accidentally injure someone on their rental property, your personal liability will cover the legal expenses if they decide to sue you.
