If you do not have personal car insurance or you have not added comprehensive coverage to your own car insurance policy, your best bet is to purchase the loss damage waiver (LDW) directly from the rental car company (in addition to liability coverage, which is required by law in most states). LDW can be pricey—but nowhere near as expensive as what you’ll pay if you aren’t properly covered and your rental is damaged by flooding.
