Yuck—being invaded by bugs is creepy and bed bugs are especially difficult because they multiply so quickly. Unfortunately, your Progressive
renters insurance won’t cover the cost of an exterminator. However, you may be able to ask your landlord to pay. Check out the following bed bug FAQ below.
Are the bed bugs just in your apartment or have your neighbors also been invaded? Knocking on your neighbors’ doors to find out could be worth your time and potential embarrassment. If it appears the entire building (or a floor in your building) has a bed bug problem, you can ask your landlord to cover the cost of an exterminator.
Did you bring the bed bugs home? On the other hand, if you’re pretty sure that you brought the little critters home in your luggage, the cost of the exterminator will be on you. Even if you didn’t intend to bring them into your apartment, you’re responsible.
How can you prevent a re-infestation once they’re gone? Whenever you stay at a B&B or hotel, do a brief room check. Inspect nightstands and headboards for tell-tale signs like dark or rusty-looking spots on sheets or walls. You may also notice insect eggshells and a musty smell. If you do see evidence of bed bugs, close up your luggage immediately and report the situation to hotel staff (and ask to be moved to a new room!).
May your battle with the bed bugs be both short and successful!
