Does Ohio require smog checks?

I’m getting ready to make a move to Ohio, and I want to be sure I’m ready for everything. I’ve got a kind of older car, so I’m worried it won’t pass emissions tests. Does Ohio require smog checks for vehicle registration?

Congratulations on your move, and on making sure you’re prepared for everything you’ll need to do once you get to your new home. If you’re moving into any of the following 7 Ohio counties, you may be required to pass a smog check every 2 years:
  • Cuyahoga
  • Geauga
  • Lake
  • Lorain
  • Medina
  • Portage
  • Summit
If you’re moving into one of these counties, you’ll likely be required to pass a smog check, but the DMV does provide some residents with waivers and exemptions, so check with your local DMV to see if it’s required for you. If you’re not moving into one of these counties, you don’t need to worry about a smog check.
