Does my home insurance cover lost items?

We had a big trip to the beach yesterday, but along the way, we misplaced my husband’s expensive camera. I know our insurance can cover damaged items, but will our homeowners insurance cover lost items?

Generally, home insurance does not cover lost items. Your policy will only protect you against certain
named perils
. These named perils could include
theft
or fire damage, but anything lost or misplaced won’t be protected.
You may be able to purchase additional coverage to protect against additional risks (like accidental loss), but it won’t apply to things that have already been lost.
While you’re considering whether to add more coverage, now’s a good time to look at your policy as a whole—there might be some savings you’re missing out on!
