Does it take a long time to charge an electric car?
I'm thinking about renting an electric car for a quick work trip, but I'm worried the charging time might interfere with my schedule. Can someone tell me how long it takes to charge an electric vehicle?

You’re right—it’s better to have these details sorted before you leave for your trip. Fully charging an electric car can take as little as 30 minutes or more than 12 hours. It just depends on the size of your battery and the speed of your charging point.
Most people charge their cars at home or at a charging station. Because of the time disparity, electric car owners tend to top up instead of refilling their battery from empty, making for quicker charging times.
Here’s the difference:
- You can find direct current chargers (DC) or rapid chargers at charging stations for faster charging. This method may be the quickest way to charge your electric car, taking between 20-30 mins.
- Alternating current (AC) is what you’ll get at home. The AC charging method is much slower because you’re using a regular plug or wallbox that moves much slower.
- The size of the battery also affects your charge time. The bigger the battery, the longer it will take for your car to go from empty to full.
