We had a major storm and a tree blew down across the front yard. Does home insurance cover tree removal?

Sorry to hear about the tree down! Home insurance does cover some tree removal fees, but it depends on the cause of the fall and the location of the tree.
Generally speaking, home insurance covers damage caused to your property. So, if the tree did not fall on any structures or buildings, then removal of the debris may not be covered.
If the tree was old or rotted prior to the storm, then the
insurance company
will likely not cover anything. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to notice and handle things like old trees so they don’t do damage to your property.
However, if the tree fell onto any structures and the cause was a
covered peril
in your policy, then removal fees may be covered. Lightning strikes are always covered, for example.
Most policies have a limit for tree removal costs, usually around 5% of the policy limit amount. Check your policy carefully before you decide to submit a claim.
