I’m renovating my home and installing all new appliances in my kitchen. While my electrical is up to date, I’m nervous that a power surge could cause a fire or damage my home. Would my home insurance cover power surges?

I hope your renovations are going well! Understandably, you want to ensure your home is safe, and, luckily, home insurance covers power surges.
In most
home insurance policies
, you’ll see this coverage listed as sudden and accidental damage from artificially generated electrical current. Simply put, this is coverage for man-made electricity or a power surge that causes damages. For example, if a power surge damaged your electrical wiring or caused a fire, your home insurance would cover it.
However, home insurance typically excludes electrical components or circuitry in appliances. Using a power surge protector is the best way to protect your new appliances.
