Does home insurance cover foundation repair?
A stream near our house flooded and caused damage to our house’s foundation. Thankfully, the rest of the house is OK, but the contractor says repairs may cost as much as $5,000. Will our home insurance cover foundation repair?

Foundation damage is often caused by water damage—very often as a result of storm surges and flooding. Unfortunately, storm surges and flooding are
perils
that are not covered by standard home insurance. If you have flood insurance, however, you should receive money to repair your foundation.- If your foundation is caused by a standard peril—such as a burst water pipe or an explosion—you should be covered.
- Home insurance policies do not cover damage caused by flooding or earthquakes. If you live in an area where flooding and/or earthquakes are common, take out flood and/or earthquake insurance to make sure you are covered.
- If your foundation needs repair because of natural settling, your policy will not cover the repair. This type of damage is considered natural wear-and-tear on a structure.
- If the foundation damage has been caused by negligence, you won’t be covered.
