Does home insurance cover a water heater?
We purchased a home last week. The mortgage company required us to get home insurance, so our policy is active. After a few hot showers, it appears our water heater is no longer working. Will our home insurance cover repairs to the water heater?

Congratulations on the new home! I can imagine it’s super frustrating to find out your water heater is dead, but your home insurance only covers your water heater for certain perils.
Since your water heater likely stopped working due to age or general wear and tear, you wouldn’t be able to submit a claim with your

. That said, if you have the heater checked out and it turns out a covered peril caused the damage, you may be able to submit a claim. Common covered perils include:
- Accidental discharge or overflow of water or steam
- Accidental tearing, burning, cracking, or bulging
- Freezing
- Fire
