Does home insurance cover a flooded basement?

My sump pump backed up and flooded my basement. I have a home insurance policy, but I’ve never had to use it before. Will home insurance cover my flooded basement?

How terrible! A backed-up sump pump doesn’t sound fun. Unless you have a specific endorsement for water damage, home insurance won’t cover a flooded basement.
Since
basement flooding
is typically considered a preventable event, home insurance companies often exclude it from coverage. Additionally, an insurance company can argue that your sump pump backed up due to neglect or lack of maintenance.
However, many insurance companies offer an endorsement for water backup and sump pump overflow. With this endorsement on your policy, you’d have coverage for damage caused by a backed-up sump pump. You’ll likely have to pay extra for this coverage, however.
That said, you’ll need the endorsement on your policy before the backup, so adding it now won’t help. However, it will provide coverage for any future issues.
