Does home contents insurance cover laptops?

My laptop recently stopped working. I’m not really sure why. I have a home insurance policy with home contents coverage. Would my home contents insurance cover my laptop?

I’m sorry to hear about your laptop! Your home contents insurance will cover your laptop if a covered peril causes the damage.
Home contents insurance is another name for personal property coverage on your
home insurance
policy.
Your personal property coverage will cover damage to your belongings from accidental damage resulting from things like:
  • Fire
  • Smoke
  • Vandalism
  • Theft
  • Falling objects
  • Weight of ice and snow
If these or any of the other
16 covered perils
cause damage to your laptop, your personal property coverage would provide either actual cash value or replacement cost to replace it.
That said, if your laptop breaks due to age, neglect, or normal wear and tear, you couldn’t file a claim with your home insurance as it excludes these.
You’ll want to review your policy to see what your contents insurance covers and excludes. Since you’re taking time to review your coverage, now is a great time to ensure you’re also paying the lowest rate with
