Does having a security system lower home insurance?

With all the home security options out there, I’ve been seriously thinking about installing a security system at my house. I’ve heard that they can pay for themselves. But is this true—does having a security system lower home insurance?

Homeowners who install security systems receive between a 2% and 15% reduction on their homeowners insurance premiums. The amount of the discount will depend upon your insurer and the complexity of the system you have installed.
That said, they won’t immediately pay for themselves. For instance, you’ll receive a larger discount if you have a monitored security system. However, systems monitored by live agents require a monthly subscription, and these fees can range between $10-50.
