Does driving for Lyft increase insurance?

After reading that Lyft takes a smaller cut of your earnings than Uber, I decided to sign up for a weekend gig. I’m aware that I have to pay my own taxes, gas, and maintenance. I’m just not sure what happens with insurance. Will driving for Lyft increase my insurance?

While Lyft provides $1 million
liability coverage
, uninsured/underinsured coverage, and comprehensive/collision with a $2,500 deductible, you still need your own insurance to drive for Lyft. Unfortunately, driving for Lyft increases insurance simply because you’re going to log more miles.
In the eyes of your insurance company, you’re going to be on the road more often, so the likelihood that you’re going to
file a claim
increases. The insurer then reflects this in the price of your insurance premiums.
In addition to increased car insurance premiums, you should also add
rideshare insurance
to your policy because Lyft doesn’t cover every single moment you’re on the job. If you’re waiting for a rider or you’re in between gigs, Lyft’s coverage drops dramatically. Rideshare insurance protects you during these times.
Even if your car insurance increases while you’re driving for Lyft, you can offset some of that cost by shopping for a new, affordable car insurance policy with the
Jerry
app.
Jerry is a licensed insurance broker that will collect quotes from over 50 top-rated insurers in minutes. After you find a great rate, Jerry can help you buy new insurance and cancel your old policy. Users save an average of $887 per year.
