Does cruise control waste more gas?

My mom has been teaching me how to drive on the highway since I got my license. I’m not quite sure why cruise control is so important besides the speed, but it seems like it would use up gas. Does cruise control waste more gas?

Congratulations on your license! Driving on the highway can be intimidating at first, but you’ll get the hang of it soon enough.
Having a
car
with cruise control is great for road trips. Cruise control does not waste gas—it actually does the opposite!
If you’re driving on mostly level ground, using cruise control can help your car save gas and increase gas mileage.
However, you should turn off cruise control if you’re driving through rolling hills. Your car and gas tank will be better off if you maintain an average speed, slow down 5-10 mph while climbing, and speed up 5-10 mph going downhill.
