Does car insurance cover me driving someone else's car?

My car finally went the way of the dodo, but it was on its last leg for a year or so. Now that I don’t have a car, my roommate offered to let me borrow his. I just want to make sure I have insurance coverage. Will his car insurance cover me if I’m driving?

If you’re ever confused about
car insurance
, just remember this: insurance policies follow the car, not the driver. So with this thought, car insurance will cover you driving someone else’s car.
However, whether it will cover you is also based on one stipulation: how often you drive the car. Under most insurance policies, car insurance will cover someone occasionally driving another person’s vehicle. While this varies from policy to policy, a general rule is that you’re covered if you drive the other person’s car 12 times a year or less.
If you plan on driving the car more than this, your friend needs to add you to the policy or you need to purchase a
non-owner car insurance policy
. A non-owner car insurance policy is liability coverage that gives you coverage on cars you don’t own. It’s probably the more affordable alternative if price is a factor.
